은평주민 문국현을 만나다.
권력에 뺏긴 가치를 탄식하며..
지난 주말(7월24일) 연신내역 주변에서 창조한국당 문국현 전 대표를 만났습니다.
사족에 불과하지만 문 전 대표를 길에서 마주친 것은 이번이 처음이 아닙니다. 작년 아니 재작년인가요? 늦은 밤 대전 유성에서 얼큰하게 취한 채 길을 가다가 문국현 대표(당시)를 마주쳤었지요. 그 일이 있은 후 며칠 지나지 않아 자유선진당과의 공동 교섭단체 구성이 발표되었으니 아마도 이 일과 관련한 협상차 대전 방문이었을 것으로 짐작합니다.
긴가민가하며 다가가 “저 혹시 창조한국당 문국현 대표님 아니세요?” 낯선 도시에서 한 밤중에 길을 가다 취객과의 예상치 않은 조우에 조금 당황했을지도 모르지만 아주 공손하고 겸손한 대토로 대해주었습니다. 그의 입장에선 결코 짧지 않았을 시간, 5분여 동안 이말 저말 횡설수설했지만 진지하게 경청하는 모습을 보고 좋은 인상을 받았던 기억이 있습니다.
문국현을 반기는 은평주민들
따라서 연서 시장에서의 이번 만남은 제가 개인적으로 문국현 전 대표와 가진 두 번째 만남입니다. 선거전이 한참인 주말 정치인들의 잦은 방문을 귀찮아하던 시장상인들은 문전대표를 보자 어느 정치인 보다 반갑고 따듯하게 맞이해 주는 모습을 볼 수 있었습니다. 과일을 한 박스 사고 차량 쪽으로 이동하는 동안 시민이나 학생들이 달려와 먼저 인사를 청하는 모습이 편안하고 자연스럽게 보였습니다.
의원직 상실 이후 미국. 영국. 캐나다 등을 방문하며 정치를 할 때 보다 더 바쁜 시간을 보내고 있다는 소식을 전해 들었기에 이번 만남이 놓칠 수 없는 기회라는 생각이 들더군요. 전혀 준비가 되지 않은 상황에서 인터뷰의사를 밝히니 마침 귀가중이니 집 앞의 생태공원에서 가볍게 얘기하자며 응해주었습니다.
먼저 호칭을 정리해야 했습니다. 현직에서 물러났으니 문국현 전 의원님 혹은 전 대표님이라고 불러야 하는데 아무래도 너무 길고 상투적이란 생각이 들더군요. 그랬더니 이제 정치인이 그냥 은평 주민 문국현이라고 하는데 그 말이 가식처럼 느껴지지 않았습니다. 함께했단 시간동안 몇 몇 주민들과 마주칠 기회가 있었는데 자연스럽게 몸에 밴 겸손함을 볼 수 있었습니다.
공원 정자에서 신발을 벗은 채로 편안하게 격의 없는 대화를 나누게 되었는데 마침 지나가던 주민 한 분이 인사를 건 내 오자, 앉은 자리에서 벌떡 일어나 신발을 챙겨 신을 겨를도 없이 맨발로 길바닥 까지 내려가 인사를 하더군요. 우리 정치인 중 과연 누가 주민을 맞이하기 위해 맨발로 길바닥에 내려설 만큼 우리를 극진하게 주인으로 대접해 줄까요?
더욱이 지금은 정치인도 아닙니다. 법은 의원직을 박탈하고 그로 하여금 향후 10년간 정치활동을 금지시킨바 있지요.
정치를 하며 서민의 어려움을 알게 됐다.
재판과 관련하여 재심 청구 가능성을 묻는 질문에 우회적인 답변을 들을 수 있었습니다.
“얼마 전 법원이 창조한국당에 배상 판결한 것이 재심 청구의 근거가 될 수 있다고 생각하지만 변호사가 판단할 문제이지요. 처음 사건은 창조한국당이 이한정씨를 잘못 공천한 것에서 시작되었는데, 신생 정당이 이한정씨의 전과 같은 것을 어떻게 알 수 있겠어요?
국가가 잘못된 전과 기록을 제공하여 창조한국당에 손해를 끼쳤다는 것을 인정한 것에 의미를 둡니다.”
대법원 판결에 대해서도 법원이 검찰의 공소장 일본주의 위배, 법원 판결의 불고불리 원칙 위배 등에 많은 문제점이 있다고 지적했습니다. 특히 문제의 “당 채권 발행과 공천 과정에 관여할 위치에 있지도 않았고, 당시 은평을에 출마하여 선거운동을 하고 있어 공천에 관여할 여유도 없었다.”며 결백을 주장했습니다.
근황에 대해서는 의원직 상실 이후 “MIT, 캠브리지 등 해외 대학과 연구기관 등의 초청 강연 등으로 바쁘게 지내고 있습니다.”며 정치인 시절 못지않게 바쁜 시간을 보내고 있다고 합니다. 향후의 활동 계획에 대해서 “사실 정치를 하지 않았으면 평탄한 삶을 계속 살았을 것입니다. 정치를 하면서 비정규직 노동자나 서민들의 어려움을 알게 됐으니, 경제 민주주의 등을 위한 정책 연구 등을 통해 봉사할 계획입니다.” 답했고 “이런 문제들에 대해 제도권 안에서 봉사하고 싶었지만 그들이(정권) 저를 제도권 밖으로 밀어냈으니 경제 분야에서 봉사할 수 밖에 없지 않겠어요?”라며 아쉬움을 남겼습니다.
고용이나 중산층 와해 양극화 등 우리 사회가 당면한 경제 문제 해결에 대해서 “사람 중심의 경제, 지식경제 육성, 중견기업 육성 등에서 해법을 찾아야 한다.”는 소신을 재차 밝혔습니다. 그리고 대선 이후 치러진 선거에서 각 정당이 ‘사람 중심의 가치’나 ‘경제민주화’ 등 자신이 지난 대선에서 공약으로 내세운 정책들을 벤치마킹하는 것도 “아직 구체적인 각론이 없는 원론적인 표현에 불과하더라도 사회 발전을 위해서 바람직한 현상”이라는 견해를 밝혔습니다.
의원직 상실 이후 소득이 없는 것이 아니냐는 질문에 “지난달 수입은 해외 초청 강연 등으로 1억 4천 여 만 원 정도 된다.”고 답하기도 했는데, 자리에 함께했던 송영작가는 “강연만 해도 연간 수억 이상의 수입을 올리는 분을 이자 2천만원에 파렴치범으로 몰았으니..”하며 혀를 찼고, “그것도 본인이 챙긴 것이 아니라 당에 이익을 주었다고 지역 주민이 선출한 의원직을 박탈하다니요?”라며 분개하기도 했습니다.
여전히 나는 은평 주민
“기왕 여기까지 왔으니 집에 들어가 차 한 잔하고 가시라”고 권하자 염치불구하고 댁을 방문하기로 했습니다. 아파트 입구 노점에서 참외를 한 봉지 구입하는데 바지 주머니를 뒤져 구겨진 돈을 챙겨 계산하는 모습이 자연스럽습니다.
부인 박수애 여사는 “남편이 정치를 할 때 보다 지금이 더 좋다.”고 합니다. 박수애 여사는 이날 저녁 창조한국당 공성경 후보의 유세장을 찾아 찬조 연설을 통해 “‘문국현이 해외로 도망갔다’거나 ‘감옥에 들어갔다’거나 의원직을 상실한 이후 ‘강남으로 돌아갔다.’”는 유언비어를 접할 때는 “속이 상하다.”며 “우리는 여전히 은평 주민이고 앞으로도 이곳에 살 것”이라고 합니다.
부인이 공성경 후보의 유세장에서 연설하는 동안 은평 주민 문국현은 먼 발치에서 부인을 바라보고 있었는데, 정치 금지 조항에 묶여 누군가를 지지하고 싶어도 먼발치로 돌아가야만 하는쓸쓸한 뒷모습을 보며 울컥 마음이 울적해졌습니다. 우리는 이 정권으로부터 정말 아까운 정치인을 빼앗긴 것 같습니다.
